Thanks to your generous support we have been able to do a great deal for the schools in the last few months. Unfortunately, due to lack of surplus finds my travel has been limited to monthly visits, which made it difficult to oversee too many projects during this time. There is still some money remaining which will be used to buy plants in the new year. It was too dry until recently and with schools closing I did not want to spend the money on plants and not have them cared for over the Christmas holidays when they would not yet be established and not be able to cope with a dry spell. More rubbish bins for classrooms have been requested. The needs of the schools were taken into account and money was spent on things that were regarded as a priority and varied in the different schools.
Approximately 70 trees were protected with 1.8m wire mesh and supported with pegs and metal rods. Apart from the children many schools have a problem with goats getting in and damaging the trees.
Toilets, kitchens and rubbish bins were painted with any remaining paint being used for areas that required it. At Mjwayeli a group of Kersney School boys who came to do community service, assisted with the painting of the inside and outside.
Buckets and basins were purchased to replace broken ones. These are part of their water conservation program. Taps are locked but water is provided in buckets for drinking and basins for washing their hands. The grey water is then used for the gardens.
The 5L buckets serve as rubbish bins in the classrooms.
Some plants were purchased when the Crawford girls group visited Celimfundo. These were to be planted but it was incredibly windy and dry at the time. They have since been planted.
Sand, stone and cement were given to Bambanani as they did not require protection for their trees. The pathway will be completed before the schools close.
Schools that required a painter or builder were paid R800 each towards the labour costs.
Another report will be sent to you next year when the balance of your funding has been used. I apologize for having taken so long but we did not want to spend the money for the sake of spending it before the end of the year but rather use it where it would benefit the schools most. Please could you forward this mail to all clubs who participated of the BMW GSM Trophy. We are extremely grateful for what we have been able to do and will still do with their donations. It is also very much appreciated by the schools. As you will see in some of the photographs, they are really making an effort to create a better learning environment for the children and we feel sure that it will instill a sense of pride and respect in and for themselves, others, their school, their community and the environment. If anyone would like any further information on the project, please contact me. My details are below.
Wishing you a very happy festive season and a very good 2017. Kind regards Dolly Warburton
